With
environmental stewardship as the cornerstone of its corporate model, Genesis
has built a strong national business while being an innovative leader in the
electronics recycling industry.
Genesis has continued to provide effective, environmentally sound solutions to e-waste without the support of new e-waste regulatory promised by provincial legislators.
Genesis’ steadfast commitment to zero-waste, of all materials recycled is achieved through innovative practices and strong relationships with end users and vendor partners. Genesis does not export any of its collected material overseas to potentially contaminate the environments of developing nations. Such export remains an ongoing problem, prompting some countries such as China to close its borders to the import of e-waste. All the materials collected by Genesis are processed and handled in B.C. making it one of the only electronics recyclers in Canada that manages 100 percent of components of dismantled units. This approach becomes particularly important when dealing with computer monitors. An average monitor contains 5 lbs. of lead, a heavy metal banned from consumer paints since the late 20th century due to its hazard to human health. Currently, computer monitors are accepted into landfills in B.C. were the lead poses the threat of groundwater contamination. Genesis has developed a 'closed loop' process in which all lead containing glass from monitors is captured and diverted to for safe handling. 100 percent of the material is recycled through smelting or is diverted for encapsulation in products that pose no environmental threat. In addition, as with its lead recovery process, Genesis has developed e-waste management criteria and process for others to follow, helping to once again establish B.C. as a leader in environmental stewardship. As well as being part of the e-waste solution, Genesis provided electronics manufacturers the opportunities to gain invaluable insight into design for the environment (DFE), a rising industry issue. DFE is a philosophy in which product design takes end-of-life recycling into consideration. The feedback from the electronics recycling techniques developed by Genesis will have a positive impact on future electronics manufacturing in terms of materials and overall product DFE and end-of-lifecycle management. In May 2005 Genesis completed its certification under ISO 14001and ISO 9001:2000 demonstrating its commitment to both environmental excellence and best practices in every aspect of its business.
